Elek

Elek is a town rich in history and cultural diversity, once home to a thriving Swabian population that has left a lasting imprint on the region. The town's civic houses and the baroque-style Church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary reflect this heritage. One of the cultural highlights is the Elek World Meeting, where locals and descendants of the deported German community gather every two years to remember and celebrate together. Elek has produced several prominent figures, including politician István Almási, writer Elvira Prohászka, and folk dancer Péter Szabó, a master of folk art. The Reibel Mihály Cultural Centre is not only a hub of local community life but also a guardian of the town's intellectual heritage. Additionally, the town’s ethnic heritage houses faithfully preserve the traditions of the German, Romanian, and Roma communities, showcasing Elek's diverse history and its residents' dedication to preserving their cultural legacy.
