Újkígyós

Újkígyós is a village with an intriguing history, having developed in the early 19th century as part of the Wenckheim family estates. One of the town’s most important landmarks is the Roman Catholic Church, whose altarpiece was painted by Károly Fischer, the master of Mihály Munkácsy, with speculation that Munkácsy himself contributed to the work. The surrounding Kurgans, or burial mounds, are remnants of the ancient past and offer a unique hiking destination. Újkígyós’s architectural heritage is particularly noteworthy, with the village’s wooden-gabled houses reflecting the distinctive characteristics of local architecture. The Ipolyi Arnold People's College hosts historical and Csángó exhibitions for visitors.
