Additional information
The Szinva Stream, a beloved symbol for the people of Miskolc, originates above Lillafüred and flows west to east across the city before merging into the Sajó River. Mentioned as early as the 14th century under the name Synwapataka, it once powered numerous watermills and wound through the city’s over 70 bridges, earning Miskolc the nickname "Little Venice." However, the devastating flood of 1878 marked the end of the mill era. In the 20th century, flood control measures led to regulation of the stream, with sections concreted or paved, though a major flood still occurred in 2010. The Szinva’s springs in the Bükk Mountains provide high-quality water, and since 1964, they have supplied part of Miskolc’s drinking water. Landmarks line its banks, including Lillafüred, home to Hungary’s highest artificial waterfall, and the Anna Limestone Cave. In the downtown sections, the Szinva plays an integral part in city life. At Pope John Paul II Square, a tiered design enables direct access to the water, where children enjoy feeding the ducks. The stream reappears near Elizabeth Square and Szinva Terrace, flowing past ruin pubs, shops, and the statue of Mancs, the famous search-and-rescue dog. The artificial waterfall and love locks add to the area’s romantic charm. Szinva’s last stop in Miskolc is near Tiszai Railway Station, where it flows quietly on to join the Sajó. The stream brings life to the city, weaving through downtown and symbolizing the perpetual movement of Miskolc.
