More information

The Lillafüred Forest Railway, commonly known as LÁEV (Lillafüred State Forest Railway), is one of Hungary’s most popular narrow-gauge railways. Its captivating route and the scenic landscapes of the Bükk Mountains make it a favorite among hikers and tourists. The railway's history spans over 100 years and is closely tied to the economic challenges following the Treaty of Trianon, when maximizing the country’s remaining resources became vital. The first train ran in 1920 through the Szinva and Garadna Valleys, originally intended for freight and timber transport. Later, with the development of tourism in Lillafüred, passenger services gained importance. Over the years, the railway has transported not only timber from the Bükk forests but also local residents and tourists. Attractions along the route, such as Lake Hámori, the Deep Valley Viaduct, and the Trout Farm, offer a unique experience for those traveling by the little train. Passengers can stop at the enchanting Lillafüred station and the Old Furnace, where day-long excursions are possible. A unique aspect of LÁEV’s history is that its fleet still includes nearly century-old passenger cars, which continue to serve tourists. Since the 1990s, new developments and renovations have helped maintain the railway’s significance for tourism. The main section of the railway operates year-round, offering special programs, especially on the Mahóca branch line, where occasional special trains entice nature enthusiasts to explore the wild beauty of the Bükk Mountains.
