Hidden among the apartment buildings in the Bulgárföld district of Miskolc lies a true natural treasure: the over 200-year-old black poplar of Bulgárföld, the oldest tree in Miskolc. With a trunk circumference of over 10 meters, a diameter exceeding 3 meters, and a height reaching nearly 31 meters, this magnificent tree is a sight to behold. This ancient tree has stood the test of time for centuries, carrying countless stories from the past. The black poplar, scientifically known as Populus nigra, belongs to the willow family and is naturally found in riverine floodplain areas. In Hungary, it was named Tree of the Year in 2004, and in Miskolc, great care is taken to preserve its health. In 2022, the Bulgárföld black poplar earned third place in the Tree of the Year contest, highlighting its natural significance. This tree holds centuries-old secrets, perhaps whispered through its rustling leaves. When it first sprouted, the area was surrounded by woodland groves that have since disappeared, replaced by human settlements. It may even remember the Bulgarian gardeners who came in the summer to grow vegetables in the area. Throughout the 20th century, the tree silently witnessed as working families moved into the newly built housing blocks and watched the area’s further development. Today, it stands quietly, observing as the tram continues its route and the neighborhood grows around it.
