Additional information
The National Theatre of Miskolc, Hungary’s oldest stone theater performing in Hungarian, has a history spanning nearly two centuries, intertwined with that of the city. It all began in 1815 when the first Hungarian theater company settled in Miskolc after leaving Cluj-Napoca. Their performances at the Korona Inn’s coach house and the cobblers' hall by the Sötétkapu were so successful that Miskolc’s citizens decided to build a stone theater, which opened in 1823. The first theater was destroyed by a devastating fire twenty years later, but the community was determined to rebuild. The construction of the new theater took ten years, and it reopened in 1857 with Mihály Vörösmarty’s play Marót bán. Designed by Italian-born architect József Cassano, the building combines Classical style with Romantic elements. The theater holds several records: it’s one of the country’s longest continuously operating theaters, with performances staged on the same site since 1857. Throughout its history, the theater has been modernized several times, with electric lighting introduced, a heating system updated, and seating expanded in 1925. Significant renovations occurred in the latter half of the 20th century, when the theater expanded into neighboring buildings, doubling its size. The 1990s renovations added several new performance spaces, including the Hall, Chamber Theatre, Playhouse, and Summer Theatre, allowing it to host various genres, from drama to music and ballet. A legendary figure associated with the theater is Eszter Bató, remembered by the bell created in her honor. The story of the bell and the theater’s construction is deeply rooted in Miskolc’s culture. The National Theatre of Miskolc remains the heart of the city’s cultural life, launching new seasons every year. Its history proves that while much has changed on these stages over two hundred years, the love of art and theater endures.
