Additional information

Saint Stephen Square is one of Miskolc's central locations, situated between Avas Hill and the downtown area, and over recent decades, it has gradually become a key venue for the city's community life. When Széchenyi Street was converted into a pedestrian zone in 1984, traffic was redirected to other city routes, severing the connection between downtown and Avas Hill. In place of demolished buildings, a parking lot emerged, and it soon became clear that this area could be ideal for creating a modern main square for Miskolc. The central figure of the square is the statue of King Saint Stephen, unveiled in 2000. Created by sculptor Zsolt Jószay, it depicts Saint Stephen with his coronation regalia, stepping through a symbolic gate of Christian culture. Lions near the statue reference a mural from the royal castle in Esztergom, while decorative elements pay homage to the Pannonhalma founding charter and other medieval motifs. The square’s name is no coincidence, as the city honors Saint Stephen's memory in various locations—many churches in Miskolc have been dedicated to him over the centuries. Over the years, Miskolc has gradually “inhabited” Saint Stephen Square, which evokes the atmosphere of nearby Elizabeth Square and connects to the green area of Avas. The square is part of Miskolc’s Green City project, focusing on eco-conscious urban planning. The blooming flower clock and the city name sign have become tourist attractions over the past decade. Today, the square is the venue for Miskolc's most significant community events, including open-air concerts, the Kocsonya Festival, August 20 celebrations, and the autumn Miskolc Picnic. Beyond these events, Saint Stephen Square remains a vital part of city life and a beloved spot for locals.
