Additional information
Földes Ferenc High School is one of Miskolc's most renowned secondary schools, with a long history and a national reputation. The school’s origins date back to the 16th century, when a Reformed high school was established in the city in 1560. Later, in the 18th century, the Catholic Minorite Order built a school in the downtown area, where the high school now stands. The current building was constructed in 1910, based on designs by Béla Orczy. Over the decades, the institution served various roles: during the world wars, it was used as a military hospital, and between 1949 and 1953, it temporarily housed students of the University of Miskolc. In 1953, the school adopted the name Földes Ferenc High School, and in the following decades, it enjoyed a golden age, ranking among the best high schools in the country. Students achieved outstanding results, particularly in science and mathematics, excelling in both national and international competitions. The building and its surroundings, including the Minorite Church and Heroes' Square, are among the most beautiful sights in northern downtown Miskolc. The unique brick-covered building has become a symbol of the city, with multiple generations often choosing it as their alma mater. Földes High School remains a vital part of local identity, and alumni, known as "földesistas," refer to it as a brand in itself.
