Additional information
Heroes' Square is one of Miskolc’s most important public spaces, where the city’s past and present converge. Although Miskolc lacks a traditional main square, Heroes' Square in the heart of downtown is one of the most popular community spaces. The Pece Stream, which once flowed here, played a significant role in shaping the square. After the 1878 flood, the stream was regulated and later diverted into a closed channel. The remaining railing of the "Red Bridge" still preserves its memory. The square is surrounded by impressive historical buildings: the Baroque Minorite Church and Földes Ferenc High School to the north, the Munk Palace and the synagogue to the south, and the Post Palace to the east. The square’s layout took shape after World War I, when residents called for a memorial to honor the fallen heroes of the war. After World War II, the square was transformed, and Soviet memorials were added, which were later relocated. Following the political changes of the 1990s, the square was redeveloped again, with an underground garage, fountains, and memorials added, complemented by green spaces and pavements. Today, Heroes' Square is one of Miskolc’s most popular meeting points, ideal for relaxation and leisure. Its historical and cultural significance ensures that both locals and tourists are drawn to this vibrant space.
