Additional information
The history of the Tiszai Railway Station in Miskolc is closely linked with the evolution of Hungarian railways. Originally built in 1859 in an English Romantic style as part of the Tiszavidéki Railway’s eastern line, the station has undergone multiple expansions and renovations over the years. In 1901, under the design of architect Ferenc Pfaff, the station was significantly expanded, maintaining its original Romantic elements while adding a longer facade decorated with towers. Due to the distinction between Miskolc’s two main stations, the other station was named Gömöri, while this station was renamed Tiszai in honor of its centennial in 1959. One of its most distinctive features was the three-track wooden train shed, dismantled in 1916. The building suffered considerable damage during World War II, underwent modifications with electrification in 1963, and was fully renovated in 2003. Memorable moments at the Tiszai station include the arrival of the first express train from Budapest to Miskolc in 1936 and the launch of InterCity services in 1991. The Tiszai Railway Station has long been a crucial transportation hub and was even immortalized in a song by the band Kispál és a Borz. Many travelers fondly remember the Utasellátó café’s famous chocolate rolls and the station’s classic resti restaurant, along with Sunday journeys of students heading back to their dormitories. The countless passengers, memories, and stories that have passed through Tiszai Railway Station have all contributed to its unique and nostalgic atmosphere.
